Building an hydraulic community.
Asylum seekers, Rom communuty, people from Alghero, students and turists: one fountain.
La costruzione idraulica della comunità.
Richiedenti asilo, comunità Rom, algheresi, studenti e turisti: un'unica fontana.
Positioned along the shore line, just few km away from the medieval town center of Alghero, the hamlet of Fertilia was built by the Fascist government of Italy in the 1930s, during the draining of the marshes which originally covered the area. The town foundation was part of a vast programme of land reclamation happening all around the country, where new agricultural soil was given to new settlers in exchange of their hard work.
As a result of the state policy the new town was populated mainly by immigrants from north east Italy and by Istrian and Dalmatian exiles after the second world war. The vast majority of Fertilians are therefore first, second or third generation refugees of the second world war.
Melting pot of peoples of different cultures, customs and traditions, Fertilia is currently a small detached fraction of about 1,700 residents where everything is a direct on hidden reference to its migrants roots. It is not for nothing that the Roma population in Alghero was leaving in Fertilia. Nor just chance that the refugee center is here. If seen under this water Fertilia shall be perceived as a clear local reference within the long and wet path towards inclusion and integration in Alghero.
How relevant was the wet land reclaim to legitimize the presence of past exiles in the Region?
Can we read the wet land reclaims history as a mythological reference for the current integration process?
If so, what would be nowadays land reclaim ? how can we envisage a similar cyclopean effort to provide inclusion to the unwelcomed refugees?
In order to test our assumptions, we decided to walk this trans historical waterway immerging ourselves into the deep agricultural land of the region, hoping to emerge with all the strength to start our modern times epic.
Shaped and Conceived by the leading international society of migrating hydraulics a fountain has been activated by the participation of the Alghero community which was freshly invited to immerge into the liquid dynamic of migrations.
Tens of participants, like colossal baroque sculptures, transformed the downtown of Alghero into a neomythological fountain referring to the history of Fertilia: the stories of the its heroic land reclaims, its legends and its lessons. An allegory of the historical regional migrations open to be reinterpreted, refuted and eventually enjoyed.
Crogiuolo di popolazioni di diverse culture, costumi e tradizioni, Fertilia è una frazione di circa 1.700 abitanti, compresa nel comune di Alghero. Incompiuta città di fondazione realizzata durante il fascismo, tra il 1944 e la fine degli anni Cinquanta, Fertilia accoglie migliaia di profughi istriani e dalmati che, spinti dalla progressiva perdita delle proprie terre cedute alla Iugoslavia di Tito, abbandonano casa ed il lavoro.
La “città incompiuta” viene progressivamente portata a termine ed abitata, rappresentando una storia d’integrazione unica nel suo genere. Nonostante ciò sembrerebbe non servire come riferimento storico per l’odierna integrazione dei richiedenti asilo che attualmente risiedono nel centro d’accoglienza Vel Mari.
Mercoledì 3 Agosto in piazza Pino Piras si inaugura un monumento umido ed interattivo dedicato ai migranti di oggi, di ieri e di domani che, affrontando interminabili avversità, giungono nell'isola sarda alla ricerca di una nuova e più dignitosa esistenza. Ideata e plasmata da eminenti idraulici internazionali la fontana è attivata dalla partecipazione della comunità algherese, frescamente invitata a contribuire allo scorrere delle acque.
Decine di partecipanti che, come colossali figure barocche, impersonano le mitologie di Fertilia e della Nurra: le bonifiche di allora, quelle mancate, quelle possibili. Allegorie di conflitti passati e presenti che rappresentano le potenzialità di un territorio dalla vocazione inclusiva.
Cosa ha permesso ad una comunità di esuli del passato di legittimare la propria presenza sul territorio? Come si potrebbe replicare oggi tale opera ciclopica, evocandola in modo da aprire gli animi della comunità algherese e dando senso e luogo alla popolazione migrante? Il progetto invita algheresi, passanti e turisti a partecipare attivamente alla costruzione della fontana , partecipando all’inaugurazione e portando da casa contenitori, tubi, bottiglie di qualsiasi provenienza e materiale con l’obbiettivo di alimentare il flusso di acqua e la maestosità della fontana, nei cui specchi viva l’eroico ricordo di una migrazione compiuta e dove si nebulizzi l’impasse di quella attuale.
